Brad Winderbaum Opens Up About the Future of Marvel Special Presentations After THE PUNISHER: ONE LAST KILL
Marvel Studios may be focused on wrapping up the Multiverse Saga with its next two Avengers films, but it sounds like the door is still wide open for more Marvel Special Presentations on Disney+.
Following the release of The Punisher: One Last Kill, fans have been wondering if Marvel plans to continue producing these standalone stories that give characters a chance to shine outside of the traditional movie and series format.
According to Brad Winderbaum, Marvel Studios’ Head of TV and Streaming, the answer is encouraging, even if there aren’t any concrete announcements just yet.
The latest special put the spotlight on Jon Bernthal’s Frank Castle and arrived to a positive response from audiences and critics. Naturally, that led to questions about what could be next and whether other Marvel characters might get the same treatment.
During a conversation with ScreenRant, Winderbaum was asked if Marvel is currently developing any additional specials. While he stopped short of revealing specific projects, he made it clear that the format remains something Marvel is interested in exploring.
He said: “Special Presentations are always fun… I just love that. That’s an opportunity. [If] someone can have a crazy idea and we can develop it as a special presentation, [it] is [a] huge opportunity for us.”
That suggests Marvel hasn’t shelved the concept. Instead, it sounds like Special Presentations remain a creative outlet where filmmakers and writers can pitch unique ideas that might not fit into a full series or theatrical release.
So far, Marvel has only released three Special Presentations: Werewolf by Night, The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, and The Punisher: One Last Kill. Each project offered something different from the studio’s usual output, whether it was horror-inspired storytelling, holiday comedy, or a gritty vigilante tale centered on Frank Castle.
The format has also been met with solid critical reception. Werewolf by Night currently holds a 90% score on Rotten Tomatoes, while The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special sits even higher at 95%. Meanwhile, The Punisher: One Last Kill currently holds a 74% rating on the review aggregator.
At the moment, Marvel Studios has bigger priorities on its calendar. The studio is charging toward the conclusion of the Multiverse Saga with Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Avengers: Doomsday, and Avengers: Secret Wars all on the horizon.
The current MCU storyline is expected to reach its conclusion in December 2027 before Marvel turns its attention toward introducing mutants into the cinematic universe.
That likely explains why Winderbaum wasn’t ready to announce any future specials. Marvel’s immediate focus is clearly on its upcoming blockbuster films. Still, his comments indicate that the Special Presentation format remains part of the studio’s creative toolbox.
For fans, that’s reason enough to be optimistic. One of the biggest strengths of these specials is their flexibility. They allow Marvel to tell smaller, self-contained stories, experiment with different genres, and spotlight characters who might not otherwise lead a major film or series.
Whether it’s a supernatural adventure, a street-level crime story, or something completely unexpected, Marvel seems eager to keep the possibility alive. Now it’s just a matter of waiting to see which “crazy idea” earns the next Special Presentation spotlight.
