Brendan Fraser Recalls Conversation With Rachel Weisz While Making THE MUMMY in Which They Doubted the Film's Success
The 1999 action movie The Mummy – and its subsequent sequels – have become classics and favorites for a couple generations of fans. They are movies that still hold up for families and adventure lovers, but before the success of the first movie, the stars were unsure about how the film would go over.
In a recent video interview with GQ, franchise star Brendan Fraser recalled his trepidation over whether the film was going to do well. He and co-star Rachel Weisz were both unsure about the movie they were making:
“When the movie was gonna come out we had no idea what it was gonna be. Is it comedy? Is it an action picture? Is it an adventure, romance, all of it, none of it? I can still hear Rachel going, ‘Oh no they’re going to confiscate our equity cards.’ What does that even mean? Did we do it wrong? Did we chew up the scenery too much? I know I did.”
I think movies that hit a lot of different categories actually do really well. I remember an interview with The Princess Bride director Rob Reiner, who said he had trouble marketing his movie because it fell into some many categories, similarly to The Mummy, but that film has also gone on to succeed well beyond its time.
Just a month ago, we reported that Fraser said he would be open to returning to the role of Rick O’Connell in The Mummy 4, even after suffering a number of injuries in the first films.
Would you like to see a fourth Mummy movie with the returning cast? I think it could be a lot of fun.
