Brendan Fraser’s THE MUMMY 4 May Actually Be Happening
It looks like Universal Pictures might be ready to resurrect one of its most beloved franchises. A new report suggests that Brendan Fraser could finally return as Rick O’Connell in a brand-new sequel, The Mummy 4.
According to insider Daniel Richtman, Universal is actively developing a continuation of The Mummy series with Fraser back in the lead.
At this point, it’s unclear whether any of the other stars from the original trilogy will return, but just the idea of seeing Fraser step back into his iconic role is enough to get fans hyped. That mix of swashbuckling adventure, horror, and comedy was just pure movie magic.
Fraser has spoken openly about being willing to revisit the character if the right idea came along. He previously said, “I don’t know how it would work. But I’d be open to it if someone came up with the right conceit.”
He also expressed his excitement about the possibility, saying, “Sign me up.” He added, “Gosh, I don't know any juicy details about it, but it's kinda been an open-ended question for some time now. I'm not opposed to it. I don't know an actor who doesn't want a job.
“I don't think I've been this famous and unsalaried at the same time in my professional life, so sign me up. We've all got to start somewhere.”
It’s easy to see why fans still connect with Fraser’s Rick O’Connell. The Mummy director Stephen Sommers once explained why Fraser was the perfect fit, saying, “He could throw a punch and take a punch and he had a great sense of humor. You really like the guy. He never comes across as cocky or arrogant.”
The original Mummy hit theaters in 1999 and was directed by Sommers. The film was a reimagining of Universal’s classic 1932 monster movie and starred Fraser alongside Rachel Weisz, John Hannah, Arnold Vosloo, Jonathan Hyde, and Kevin J. O’Connor.
It spawned two direct sequels and even launched the prequel spinoff The Scorpion King, which kicked off Dwayne Johnson’s acting career.
The last entry in the series, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, was released in 2008. Almost a decade later, Universal attempted to reboot the franchise with Tom Cruise in The Mummy (2017), but that film flopped, losing a reported $60–95 million and effectively killing the studio’s plans for a larger Universal Monsters shared universe.
For longtime fans, the prospect of Fraser returning to The Mummy 4 is a sequel fans been waiting on for years. Universal hasn’t confirmed anything official yet, but if these reports are true, the O’Connell family’s next great adventure may finally be on the horizon.
