Brian De Palma Is Set to Direct SWEET VENGEANCE This Summer

For a while there, it looked like we might already have seen the final curtain call from Brian De Palma. A little over a year ago, the legendary filmmaker mentioned he intended to make “one other film” that was already in the casting stage, offering some reassurance that Domino wouldn’t be the last time his name rolled across the screen.

Still, time has a way of turning uncertainty into concern, especially when you’re talking about a filmmaker who doesn’t exactly chase easy financing.

Well, according to The Film Stage, De Palma is officially returning to direct Sweet Vengeance, with production scheduled to kick off in Portugal this summer. The project has been quietly circling for years, first revealed back in 2018, and it’s finally moving forward.

When De Palma originally spoke about the film, he described it as being “inspired by two true stories of murders” and explained the approach he wanted to take with the material: “I’m interested in how they tell the story of the crime, so I’ll do it the way [they] do on television.”

This sounds like fertile ground for a filmmaker who’s spent decades interrogating violence, voyeurism, and media obsession.

Casting hasn’t been announced yet, but more information is expected soon. With production starting this summer, w’re sure to learn more about the film as production gets closer. For fans who feared Domino might be the end of the line, Sweet Vengeance feels like it could be a strong return from one of cinema’s most distinctive voices.
