Brie Larson Filmed AVENGERS: ENDGAME Before CAPTAIN MARVEL and The Russos Discuss Her Look

When Marvel fans got their first look at Brie Larson in Avengers: Endgame many of them noticed that she looked so much different from how she looked in Captain Marvel. Some fans even complained about the makeup she was wearing and her new hair style. Well, there’s a good reason that she has a much different look in Endgame than she did in Captain Marvel.

Avengers: Endgame was the first time that Larson played Carol Danvers! She shot her scenes for Endgame before she shot Captain Marvel, so at that point she was still trying to figure out who her character would be in terms of the characters look.

Director Joe Russo explained to /Film that they “set the parameters…in terms of what we need,” but they allow the actors and their makeup team to figure out their own style of makeup and hairstyles:

“We give all the actors ownership over there. Every hairstyle that Scarlet Johansson has had and every movie that we’ve done has come from Scarlet Johansson.”

As far as Larson’s look goes, Russo explained:

“She [filmed Avengers: Endgame] before she filmed Captain Marvel, and I think she was experimenting with what the character was. And those were the choices that she and her hair and makeup team had made. And I think as she started to gain a deeper understanding of the character, especially as she approached her own movie. She started to make different choices and as an artist she should be afforded that right to make whatever choice that she wants to make.”

So, that’s the reason why her character looks so different in Endgame. Larson was in the process of figuring out who her character was that that ended up being refined as she went into production on Captain Marvel.

I personally don’t have any issue with her look in Endgame, but it’s interesting to learn that the looks of the characters come from the actors themselves and that the directors don’t choose their styles for them. During the recent Endgame press conference, Larson said:

“This film [Endgame] will always be personally dear to me because it was my first time playing Captain Marvel. We shot this first so I had to stumble and figure out who this character was with no script for this and no script for Captain Marvel, either, and perform for the first time in front of legends.”

In the end, I’m sure that Endgame is going to end up being an awesome movie and the look of a character is one of the least important things about the story.

Avengers: Endgame hits theaters on April 26th.
