BROOM-HILDA Rights Purchased For Big Screen Adaptation

What can I say? This is like reporting that Ziggy is getting his own movie. It's not often that comic strip characters transition to the big screen, and even more rare for one as obscure as overweight alcoholic witch Broom-Hilda. Granted, a lot of cities do still run the comic strip, but I don't believe it has nearly the reach of Garfield or Marmaduke. Still, Deadline reports the rights to the character have been purchased by producers Gilbert Adler and Jason A. Rosenberg, who are hoping to kickstart a film franchise.

Adler is the same guy who was behind the successful run of Tales From The Crypt on HBO and has produced films like Tales From The Crypt on HBO and has produced films like Superman Returns and Constantine. In regards to the film he wishes to make, Adler had this to say:

When you look at the comic strip, it looks like maybe it’s for a young audience, but we look at it differently. This is about a witch who has varying powers, but has a problem with weight. And if you look around, doesn’t everyone? And we thought, well that’s it.

Adler went on to say he'd like to create a film that's both for a wide audience as well as heartwarming. For whatever reason, I can't stop picturing Melissa McCarthy dressed as a witch.

I'll be honest, I had to look Broom-Hilda up as it's been a good while since I've read the Sunday comics. I found this cartoon, which seems a little raunchy for its time, but it has its moments. Check it out below.
