BUDDY 2 Could Get Even Wilder as Director Casper Kelly Teases Sequel Plans

BUDDY turned a cheerful orange unicorn into nightmare fuel, confused more than a few unsuspecting parents, and somehow got audiences singing along with the madness.

Now director Casper Kelly is already thinking about what he could do with a sequel, including which familiar faces he might drag into Buddy’s twisted little world next.

The $3 million indie horror movie became one of 2026’s more interesting success stories, earning $27 million at the box office and developing a cult following that has kept the movie circulating online. Its bizarre songs, creepy children’s TV aesthetic, and murderous mascot proved to be a pretty great combination.

The marketing also played its cards close to the chest, presenting the movie with enough retro kids-show energy that there were reports of parents taking their children to see BUDDY under the impression they were getting something closer to Barney. They definitely didn’t get that.

With the movie finding such a passionate audience, a sequel feels like a natural possibility. During the special sing-along re-release of BUDDY, Kelly spoke with ComicBook about whether he has started thinking about another movie, and he has.

“I definitely have ideas. I have ideas,” Kelly said. “And they keep coming! I’m writing them all down! So knock on wood, hopefully!”

Nothing has officially been announced yet, but Kelly clearly isn’t short on material if BUDDY 2 gets the green light. One of the fun surprises of BUDDY was its cast. Cristin Milioti (The Penguin) starred as Grace, while Topher Grace (Spider-Man 3) played her husband, with cult favorite Clint Howard also popping up.

The voices coming out of the furry characters from the fictional It’s Buddy! TV show were just as impressive. Patton Oswalt, Michael Shannon, Eric Bauza, and Keegan-Michael Key, who voiced Buddy himself, all joined the insanity.

That opens up a pretty fun question for a sequel: Who else could Kelly convince to join the franchise? It sounds like he already has a few people in mind, although he isn’t naming names yet. “A little bit. A little bit. But it’s early days; I’m just brainstorming right now. Hopefully.”

The original movie revolves around It’s Buddy!, a 1990s children’s television series hosted by a bright orange humanoid unicorn with a purple heart on his chest. T

he lovable TV mascot isn't nearly as friendly as he appears. Buddy is actually a murderous, tyrannical monster with supernatural abilities that allow him to pull children through television screens and imprison them inside his world.

Things begin to unravel when one child manages to escape. Grace becomes convinced that someone from her family is missing, even though nobody else remembers that person ever existing. Her obsession with finding the truth eventually puts her on a collision course with Buddy and the evil hiding inside his seemingly innocent children's show.

There’s plenty of room to expand that mythology, especially with Kelly already coming up with ideas. A sequel could dig further into Buddy’s strange world, introduce more characters from the fictional TV series, and give Kelly another excuse to recruit some unexpected actors and voice talent.

For now, fans will have to wait and see whether BUDDY 2 actually happens. Considering the original turned a $3 million budget into a $27 million theatrical run while building a devoted cult audience, Buddy may have a pretty good reason to crawl back through the TV screen.

BUDDY arrives on digital platforms October 13th.
