BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER Reboot Star Shares First Look at Her Verion of The Slayer
As you know, the planned return of Buffy the Vampire Slayer hit a wall when Hulu pulled the plug on its reboot, but now fans are getting a glimpse of what could have been.
The scrapped series had been coming together for a while, building toward a new chapter in the Slayer legacy. A pilot was ordered, a creative team was locked in, and a fresh face was ready to take up the stake.
Then it was all scrapped. But thanks to the show’s star, we at least get a small window into that lost version of Sunnydale.
Ryan Kiera Armstrong, who had been tapped to lead the reboot as the new Slayer, took to Instagram and dropped a photo of herself in full character.
In the image, she’s geared up in costume, carrying a bag slung over her shoulder, looking every bit like someone ready to take on the supernatural. Her caption was simple but effective: “🖤 your slayer.”
That post landed right after news broke that the reboot wouldn’t be moving forward, which only made it more emotional for fans who were already curious about the show. And judging by the reactions, people were ready to embrace Armstrong in the role.
The series, titled Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale, had some serious talent attached. Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao was set to direct and executive produce, while original Buffy herself, Sarah Michelle Gellar, was lined up for a recurring role.
After the cancellation, Armstrong shared a heartfelt message with fans on her Instagram Story, thanking them for their support. She made it clear she was proud of the work that went into the project and grateful for the experience, even if the finished product may never see the light of day.
“Throughout the past couple of months, it’s been really special. I’m really proud of what we did. I’m sad that you guys won’t be able to see it, but that doesn’t take away from the amazing experience that I had. I want to say thank you to Sarah [Michelle Gellar], the second sisters [and] Chloé Zhao.
“I love you guys, and I also want to say thank you to old fans and all the people that believed in this new chapter and who believed in me. So thank you, guys. Thank you to the cast that I worked with.
“You guys are awesome. But I guess all I want to say is, you know, we brought this back for you guys. And you know, ‘Buffy’ is such a big part of all of our lives, and it’s not going anywhere, so who knows what the future will hold.”
Buffy the Vampire Slayer is a full-on cult phenomenon that defined an era of supernatural TV. The idea of revisiting that world with a new Slayer clearly struck a chord.
Even though this version is off the table for now, Armstrong’s post shows there’s still a strong appetite for more stories in this universe.
