BUMBLEBEE Director Travis Knight Comments on Michael Bay Returning to the TRANSFORMERS Universe

Michael Bay is known for making action movies that are fun to watch on the big screen, and do well in the box office. For a decade, that effort was directed for the most part to the Transformers franchise.

From 2007 to 2017, he released five Transformers films, then he seemingly retired from that particular franchise to make other films.

While he was gone, Bumblebee (2018) and Transformers: Rise of the Beasts (2023) were made in the same universe, and despite their warm reception from fans, they didn’t smash the box office the same way Bay’s films did.

So we found out last year that Paramount is working with Michael Bay to reboot the Transformers franchise, and Travis Knight, who directed Bumblebee, was asked his opinion on Bay’s return. While at the press junket for Knight’s most recent film, the stop-motion epic Wildwood, Knight said of the director:

“He started that whole thing, and I’m interested to see what he does. Michael was an amazing supporter of me when I was making Bumblebee. And I really did appreciate that. He gave me some great advice. Bumblebee was a joyful experience for me, bringing that world to life.”

He went on to add: “You know, with every film that I’ve done, I put everything that I have into the film, assuming I’ll never get another chance to tell a story in this world and with these characters. That was the case with Bumblebee.

“You always imagine where these characters’ lives go beyond the end of the film, beyond the edge of the frame… I love living in that universe. I’m grateful for the time that I had there. And I cannot wait to see where Michael takes it from here.”

It’s nice when there’s comradery in the arts, and people support each other. Knight went on to make this year’s Masters of the Universe, and Wildwood, and he’s in pre-production on another stop-motion film titled Piranesi. We don’t have much info on the next Transformers, but we should hear more soon.
