Byleth Joins SUPER SMASH BROS. ULTIMATE

This morning, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate fans received the news that the fifth and final fighter included in the Fighter Pass is Byleth, the protagonist of Fire Emblem: Three Houses. Byleth features low mobility, but they’re more of a ranged weapon. In addition, your weapon does change based on the direction you point. The Sword of the Creator is the base weapon, and while it is a sword, it also turns into a whip that can be used for range attacks and also for ledge grabs. Areadbhar is a glaive-like weapon that appears when you use the side-directional attacks. You’ll want to pay attention as the tips is the strongest part. The axe Aymr is used when using your down-direction attacks. This is perfect for meteor attacks. Failnaught is a bow used for neutral attacks. It is cool that some of the color variations are based on the house leaders and Sothis.

Garreg Mach Monestary is the new stage. This stage changes during the battle and cycles through some locations. At the Marketplace, you’ll be watched by Blue Lion students including Dimitri. Black Eagle students will watch you in the Reception Hall. The Bridge feautures Claude and other Golden Deer students will be watching. Finally, in the Cathedral, Rhea, Seteth, and Flayn will watch your fight.

I am very disappointed in this choice. Smash Bros. Ultimate has a lot of sword fighters, and it feels like they have a lot of Fire Emblem characters. I know I was not alone in hoping to see someone from a franchise not yet represented. There were rumors of Dante from Devil May Cry, I heard people wishing for the main character from Astral Chain or characters from Resident Evil or even a few others that would’ve been really cool. That being said, I do appreciate that they made Byleth very unique in their gameplay. I’m even excited to give Byleth a try despite it being another Fire Emblem character.

In addition to Byleth, five new Mii costumes were shown off. These including Altair from Assassin’s Creed for the Swordfighter, Rabbids as a hat, X from MegaMan X for the Gunner, MegaMan.EXE from the MegaMan Battle Network games for the Gunner, and finally a Cuphead costume for the Gunner.

To close out the announcement, we were told that six more fighters are being added to the game in Fighter Pass Vol. 2. You can pre-purchase it on January 28, but no other information was released outside of a special bonus being a new costume for Mii Swordfighter. You’ll get the Ancient Armor from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
