CALL OF DUTY: MODERN WARFARE 4 Revealed With Explosive First Trailer and a Massive New War

Activision has released the first trailer for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, and it’s clear that Infinity Ward is aiming for a much bigger and more intense experience this time around.

After spending the past two years focused on the Black Ops corner of the franchise, Call of Duty is shifting back to the Modern Warfare storyline with a direct follow-up to 2023’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.

That game caught a lot of heat from players after launch, especially when it came to its campaign, but MW4 already looks like a serious course correction.

The reveal trailer throws players into a massive conflict on the Korean Peninsula as North Korea launches an invasion that threatens to spiral into global chaos. Alongside the return of Captain Price and Task Force 141, the game introduces a brand-new South Korean squad fighting to survive on the front lines.

The official synopsis reads: “War erupts on the Korean Peninsula as North Korea launches a full-scale invasion that threatens to destabilize the world in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4.

“A young squad of South Korean soldiers fight to survive on the collapsing front lines, while half a world away a vengeful Captain Price wages a personal war from the shadows as he stays one step ahead of those hunting him. As Price’s off-book mission collides with the forces behind the invasion, the war spreads beyond anyone’s control.”

This is going to be more grounded and militaristic compared to some of the recent globe-hopping entries in the franchise, and the footage shown in the trailer leans hard into large-scale warfare, urban destruction, and tense squad combat.

Captain Price also appears to be operating outside official channels again, which usually means things are going to get messy.

Of course, campaign won’t be the only focus. Multiplayer is returning with a fresh batch of maps and modes, while DMZ is also back after building a strong fanbase over the past few years.

Infinity Ward’s extraction shooter mode has become one of the more interesting additions to Call of Duty, and it looks like the studio plans to expand it even further in Modern Warfare 4.

One of the biggest surprises tied to the announcement is that Modern Warfare 4 is officially coming to Nintendo Switch 2. Microsoft previously promised that future Call of Duty games would eventually land on Nintendo hardware following the Activision acquisition, and now that promise is finally becoming reality.

Outside of Switch 2, the game will launch on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC when it releases on October 23rd.

Notably, this is also the first Call of Duty title of the current generation to completely leave PS4 and Xbox One behind. That probably means Infinity Ward can push the visuals, scale, and performance further than recent entries that still had to support aging hardware.

One thing players might not be thrilled about is that Modern Warfare 4 won’t launch directly onto Xbox Game Pass. Microsoft changed parts of its subscription strategy earlier this year, and this latest Call of Duty release apparently falls outside those plans.

Still, based on this first trailer, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 looks like a much stronger step forward for the series. Between the new setting, the return of Price, and a more serious war-driven story, Infinity Ward seems determined to bring some weight back to the franchise.

Now we wait to see if the gameplay can back it all up.
