Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore, and Lucy Liu Reportedly Returning for Charlie’s Angels Reboot

A new report says that Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore, and Lucy Liu are expected to return for Sony’s upcoming Charlie’s Angels reboot. The trio that defined the early 2000s era of the franchise may be suiting up once again.

It was recently reported that Sony has hired writer Pete Chiarelli, known for The Proposal and Crazy Rich Asians, to reboot Charlie’s Angels for the 2020s. The script is currently in the works, and while no official casting has been announced, The InSneider reports that Diaz, Barrymore, and Liu are expected to appear in the film.

It’s unclear whether they’ll be front and center as the leads or stepping in to pass the torch to a new generation of Angels, but either way, their involvement changes the energy of this reboot in a big way.

Bringing them back instantly reconnects the franchise to the era that audiences still associate with McG’s slick action, glossy style, and popcorn fun.

Chiarelli is also reportedly trying to figure out how to bring back Demi Moore, who played a former Angel-turned-villain in the 2003 sequel Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle. There’s just one small issue. Her character blew herself up at the end of that movie.

Apparently that minor detail isn’t stopping anyone, because Chiarelli is trying to piece her back together for the reboot. In Hollywood, if you fall off a cliff or explode, that just means there’s a creative workaround waiting to happen.

Director McG helmed the first two big-screen Charlie’s Angels films in the early 2000s. The first movie was colorful, chaotic, and undeniably entertaining. The sequel, Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle, didn’t quite hit the same highs, but that original film still holds up as glossy, over-the-top fun that knew exactly what it wanted to be.

This new version will reportedly ignore the 2019 reboot directed by Elizabeth Banks, which Sony released to disappointing box office results. That means Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott, and Ella Balinska are not expected to return.

The franchise itself goes all the way back to the 1970s television series, which became a pop culture phenomenon and helped launch the careers of Farrah Fawcett, Kate Jackson, and Jaclyn Smith. The brand has always leaned into style, action, and star power.

Diaz, who recently stepped out of retirement, has been lining up new projects. Barrymore has been busy hosting her daytime talk show, and Liu continues to take on film roles, including the upcoming Devil Wears Prada sequel.

If this all comes together, Charlie’s Angels could finally recapture the spark that made the franchise such a fun ride in the first place.

With Pete Chiarelli steering the script and the original Angels potentially back in action, this reboot has a real shot at delivering the slick, playful energy fans have been missing. Now we just wait to see how wild the mission gets.
