CAPTAIN AMERICA: BRAVE NEW WORLD Earns MCU's Lowest CinemaScore but Still Opens Strong
Marvel Studios' Captain America: Brave New World, has hit a milestone, but not the kind it was hoping for. The film has received a B- CinemaScore, which is the lowest-ever for an MCU movie.
The score is even lower than Eternals (B) and Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania (B), both of which were already critically panned.
For those unfamiliar, CinemaScore gathers feedback from opening-night audiences, grading movies from A+ to F. It’s an early indicator of how a film resonates with general audiences, and a B- isn’t exactly a promising sign for longevity.
For context, The Winter Soldier and Civil War both scored an A, while even The Incredible Hulk landed an A-. A B- puts Brave New World in the same category as Hulk (2003), Dark Phoenix, and Venom: The Last Dance, which is not great company.
Critically, Brave New World isn't faring much better. Its Rotten Tomatoes score sits at 50% from 234 reviews, making it only the third "Rotten" MCU movie, slightly ahead of Eternals (47%) and Quantumania (46%).
But, despite the lukewarm reception, the film is still pulling in solid box office numbers for its opening four-day weekend with $192.4 million world wide. So, audiences still showed up.
The real test will be the second weekend. If word-of-mouth continues to skew negative, that drop could be rough. We've seen it happen before, and a B- CinemaScore suggests that casual audiences might not be loving this one either.
So, Brave New World may have started strong financially, but its long-term fate is uncertain.
