CAPTAIN AMERICA Star Chris Evans Talks About the Possibility of Returning to the MCU
A lot of Marvel movie fans would love to see Chris Evans return to the role of Steve Rogers / Captain America in the MCU again at some time. Over the years there have been reports and rumors that this is something Marvel Studios plans on doing, but it’s something that has yet to happen.
Personally, I’d be fine not seeing Evans back as Captain America. While I loved him in the role, his story arc closed out perfectly. There’s really no reason to drag him back in, especially at this point where Marvel would most likely screw up his return. Marvel doesn’t have the same great track record that it used to.
Over the years, Evans has been asked several times about the possibility of returning to the MCU and he’s been hesitant about the idea of revisiting the character of Steve Rogers. But, when asked about it again in a recent interview with GQ, Evans seemed a bit more enthusiastic about the prospect saying “Never say never.”
“Yeah, maybe. I’ll never say never, just because it was such a wonderful experience. But I’m also very precious with it. It’s something that I am very proud of. And like I said, sometimes I can’t believe it even happened. And I wouldn’t want the black eye if it felt like a cash grab or if it didn’t live up to expectations or if it just felt like it wasn’t connected to that original thing. So, no time soon.”
If Steve Rogers did show up again, it seems like the most likely films is could happen would be Avengers: The Kang Dynasty or Avengers: Secret Wars, because the possibility of making it happen is wide open in those films.
In the same interview, Evans also revealed that he very nearly turned down the opportunity to join the MCU after already playing The Human Torch in 20th Century Fox's Fantastic Four movies:
“I was really apprehensive about taking the role initially. I remember in my late 20s having a real shift in how I felt on set, how I felt promoting films: a little more anxiety, a little more uncertainty. You always end up questioning, Is this what I should be doing?…I just wasn’t sure if I was moving closer to myself or further away. And something inside me kept saying that I was getting further away— that something about this industry wasn’t healthy.”
Earlier this year Evans talked about the right time to return to play Captain America saying that there are “more more Steve Rogers stories to tell.” He said:
"It's tough, because look, I love that role deeply. He means so much to me, and I really do. I think there's more Steve Rogers stories to tell, sure. But at the same time, I'm very, very precious with it. I'd become, you know, it's like this little shiny thing that I have that I love so much, and I just don't want to mess up in any way, and I was a part of something that was so special for the special period of time and in a way, it really landed so well. As much as I'm connected to that role and love telling those stories and working with those people. It doesn't quite feel right, right now."
In recent years it seems like Evans is more open to the idea of coming back to play Rogers if the time is right and if there’s the right story. Do you think Marvel will end up bringing him back at some point? Do you think they should?
