CAPTURING BIGFOOT Trailer Unearths the True Story Behind the Famous Bigfoot Footage
Bigfoot has spent decades hiding in the woods, but one grainy piece of film has refused to disappear. In 1967, roughly a minute of footage shot in Northern California became one of the most famous and fiercely debated pieces of cryptozoological evidence ever recorded.
The Patterson-Gimlin film appears to show a large, hairy creature walking through the wilderness, and people have been arguing over its authenticity ever since.
Now, a new documentary is digging into what really happened. Capturing Bigfoot will be released exclusively on Amazon Prime Video and in select theaters on October 20, and the official trailer offers a fascinating new look at the story surrounding the legendary footage.
October 20 is National Bigfoot Day, marking the anniversary of the day Roger Patterson captured the film in 1967.
For nearly six decades, the Patterson-Gimlin footage has been picked apart frame by frame by believers, skeptics, researchers, and anyone else hoping to determine whether the creature on film is the real deal or an elaborate hoax.
Now, a recently discovered reel of 16mm film found inside a safe could add something new to that decades-old debate.
Directed by Marq Evans, Capturing Bigfoot digs beyond the creature itself and explores the people connected to one of the biggest mysteries in American folklore. Patterson's own son shares the story for the first time, alongside others who were there and experienced the events surrounding the footage.
The filmmakers explain, “This is a story about family, legacy, broken friendships, and belief itself.” That human side could be what makes Capturing Bigfoot particularly interesting.
The Patterson-Gimlin film has become so iconic that the story of the people involved has often been overshadowed by endless arguments over what's actually walking across the screen.
Maybe Capturing Bigfoot finally provides some answers. Maybe it raises even more questions. Either way, finding a previously unknown 16mm film reel tied to one of cryptozoology's most enduring mysteries is a pretty damn good reason to revisit the case.
Capturing Bigfoot arrives on Amazon Prime Video and in select theaters October 20.
