Carrie Fisher's Brother Talks about the Unused Footage of Her That Will Be Included in STAR WARS: EPISODE IX
We’ve known for awhile already that there would be some unused footage of Carrie Fisher from the previously made Star Wars films that would be incorporated into J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: Episode IX.
Abrams initially talked about using the unused footage of Carrie Fisher, he only mentioned footage from Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Here's that statement:
"We desperately loved Carrie Fisher. Finding a truly satisfying conclusion to the Skywalker saga without her eluded us. We were never going to recast, or use a CG character. With the support and blessing from her daughter, Billie, we have found a way to honor Carrie’s legacy and role as Leia in Episode IX by using unseen footage we shot together in Episode VII."
It was later revealed that there would be unused footage from The Last Jedi as well. ABC News’ Clayton Sandell, previously talked to Carrie's brother Todd, and explained:
"I talked to Todd Fisher today about all of this and he has been talking with J. J. Abrams about it. I asked him, because the press release only said The Force Awakens so I asked about The Last Jedi, and they are also using unused footage from The Last Jedi. I asked him how many minutes of footage they had from it and he said ‘I can’t tell you that!'
"He (Todd Fisher) said there were big surprises coming – big surprises with this movie, this performance, and the unused footage – and said – this one is really for the fans.
"But they apparently have a number of unused minutes from both The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi.
"Todd and the whole family are very excited and wanted it to happen."
Now Todd Fisher has talked about it himself in a recent interview with ABC News and he explains that the footage being used will be much more than just outtakes. Abrams apparently has lots of unused content from scrapped scenes that can be used to fit naturally into the storyline of Episode IX:
“There's a lot of minutes of footage. I don't mean just outtakes. This is unused, new content that could be woven into the storyline. That's what's going to give everybody such a great kick. It's going to look like it was meant to be. Like it was shot yesterday.”
That’s great to hear! It’s going to be really interesting to see how this footage will be used to fit into the story for Episode IX. I really hope that this final chapter of the saga gives the fans what they want and makes them happy.
The movie stars Oscar Isaac, John Boyega, Anthony Daniels, Adam Driver, Domhnall Gleeson, Richard E. Grant, Mark Hamill, Billie Lourd, Lupita Nyong’o, Daisy Ridley, Joonas Suotamo, Kelly Marie Tran, Naomi Ackie, Keri Russel, and Billy Dee Williams.
Star Wars: Episode IX is currently set to be released on December 20th, 2019.
