Cassandra Cain/Batgirl Has Been Cast in DC's BIRDS OF PREY Film
Warner Bros. and director Cathy Yan has cast an actress in the role of Cassandra Cain a.k.a. Batgirl in DC’s Birds of Prey. The role went to newcomer Ella Jay Basco, a young actress whose life is about to change with a role of this magnitude.
Basco is such a newcomer that there are very few photos of her online. But, she has had bit parts in shows such as Grey’s Anatomy and Veep. She joins Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn with Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress, Jurnee Smollett-Bell oas Black Canary, Rosie Perez as Montoya, and Ewan McGregor will play the film’s villain Black Mask.
In Birds of Prey, Harley Quinn, Huntress, and Black Canary will team up to protect Cain’s character when she comes across a diamond belonging to McGregor’s Black Mask, a kingpin in Gotham City’s criminal underworld.
In the comics, Cain is the daughter of assassins David Cain and Lady Shiva, and she is conditioned to become the world’s greatest assassin. She was eventually adopted by Bruce Wayne and ended up becoming Batgirl.
I imagine that Basco will also reprise the role in the standalone Batgirl movie that is currently in development with Christina Hodson (Bumblebee) writing the script.
I’m really curious to see how this film version of the character turns out.
Birds of Prey is set to be released on February 7th, 2020.
