Casting the Lead For Shang-Chi Partially Landed on Awkwafina's Shoulders
If you have watched anything related to Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, you know that Simu Liu’s Shang-Chi and Awkwafina’s Katy have great on screen chemistry. A thing like that can’t be forced, it is something that is natural between like minds.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Awkwafina, being the first person cast, was able to help in casting her best friend/protagonist in Shang-Chi. Here is what she had to say about the process:
All I knew on that day was that I was a part of finding Shang-Chi. So I just wanted to do just that. I wanted to come in, do my part, not be distracting and let these actors give probably one of the most important auditions of their lives at that point. So I just wanted to blend in and help them showcase what they could do. But I remember testing with Simu that day, and he was nervous. I was nervous, too. I was like, “I hope I don’t get fired in the process of chemistry reading,” but it was apparent that he was Shang-Chi from the jump.
This is exactly what was needed for this film. I had the amazing opportunity to see this movie and it was amazing. Without spoiling anything, I will say that the chemistry was necessary to make this movie work.
I attached the link to the THR interview above, but let me warn you, it is semi-spoilery. It is best for everyone to go into this movie with no preconceived notions on what you will see in this movie. So, let me give a rundown of the more fun topics.
