Channing Tatum and Joseph Gordon-Levitt Team Up For an Amazon Series COMRADE DETECTIVE
On any normal day, a project that involved Channing Tatum and Joseph Gordon-Levitt would pique my interest. It turns out that the project that they are currently involved with together sounds amazing!
It was recently announced that Tatum’s pet project television show, Comrade Detective, will be hitting Amazon on August 4th of this year. Never heard of it before? Me either, but now that I have, I can’t wait to see it.
The series is being presented as a half-hour 1980s TV series from Romania and Tatum and Gordon-Levitt will be providing the voice dubbing for the two Romanian actors, Florin Piersic Jr. and Corneliu Ulici, that are playing Detectives Gregor Anghel and Iosef Baciu. You know, because in the 80s Romania wasn't showing English speaking TV shows. Here's the synopsis:
In the thick of 1980's Cold War hysteria, the Romanian government created the country's most popular and longest-running series, Comrade Detective, a sleek and gritty police show that not only entertained its citizens but also promoted Communist ideals and inspired a deep nationalism. The action-packed and blood-soaked first season finds Detectives Gregor Anghel (played by Piersic) and Iosef Baciu (played by Ulici) investigating the murder of fellow officer Nikita Ionesco and, in the process, unraveling a subversive plot to destroy their country that is fueled by---what else---but the greatest enemy: Capitalism. Though the beloved show was sadly forgotten about after the fall of the Berlin Wall, it has been rediscovered and digitally remastered now with its main heroes voiced by Tatum and Gordon-Levitt. Comrade Detective is a true portal into a time and place and a powerful reminder of what art can be---and it is now ready to be seen by the modern world on a larger scale than ever before.
Make sense? The way I see it, it is like what a lot of us did as kids. Take a show on TV, mute it and give the show your own lines. Joey and I did this many times when we were growing up and the recorded results were hilarious. Don’t get it wrong, this isn’t going to be a slouch of a TV show. Tatum and JGL aren’t the only voice actors participating in this project.
The list of all the people contributing their voice skills for the series includes Nick Offerman, Jerrod Carmichael, Jake Johnson, Jenny Slate, Fred Armisen, Bo Burnham, John Early, Jason Mantzoukas, Mahershala Ali, Kim Basinger, Bobby Cannavale, Richard Jenkins, Chloë Sevigny, Debra Winger, Katie Aselton Duplass, Mark Duplass and Tracey Letts.
I have no doubt that this show is going to be funny, I just hope people are open-minded enough to get the humor. I can’t wait to see how this plays out.
