Channing Tatum Says 23 JUMP STREET Probably Isn’t Happening and He’s Blaming One Person for It
It’s been over a decade since Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill brought their undercover cop antics to the big screen in 21 Jump Street and 22 Jump Street, and fans have been waiting ever since to see if 23 Jump Street would ever happen.
Unfortunately, Tatum doesn’t think it’s going to, and he’s pointing the finger at one of the film’s producers. In a recent interview with Variety, Tatum opened up about the ongoing interest in a third Jump Street movie, admitting it’s the project fans still ask him about the most.
"I get asked more about Jump Street 3 than any other movie on the face of the planet that I've ever done. I don’t think it'll ever happen. The problem is the overhead.
“It would cost as much as the actual budget of the film – if not more – because of all the producers involved. It's just too top-heavy. It falls over every time."
According to Tatum, the issue comes down to money and specifically, one person’s paycheck. He went on to explain that Neal H. Moritz, the longtime producer behind the Jump Street films, as well as the Sonic the Hedgehog and Fast & Furious franchises, might be the reason the movie hasn’t moved forward.
“Neal's price for a producer fee is huge. And to be honest, that's what's killing it.”
Tatum and Hill starred as Jenko and Schmidt in the action-comedy series, playing undercover cops infiltrating schools to bust drug rings, first in 21 Jump Street’s high school setting, then in 22 Jump Street’s college sequel.
The second film famously ended with a hilarious montage teasing dozens of fake sequels (Medical School Jump Street, Cooking School Jump Street, and even one where Seth Rogen replaces Hill).
There was also almost a Jump Street and Men in Black crossover movie, which would’ve been wild! It’s a shame that one didn’t happen.
The crossover was tentatively titled MIB 23. Despite landing James Bobin (The Muppets) as the director at one point, MIB 23 never made it past the development stage, and the Jump Street franchise was stalled indefinitely.
Tatum previously addressed the Men in Black x 21 Jump Street crossover, saying, "There is a project that was written and it's still the best script that I've ever read for a third movie."
