Channing Tatum Says LOGAN and DEADPOOL Smashed Down Doors For His GAMBIT Film
Channing Tatum's feature film adaptation of Gambit has been plagued with issues since the beginning, but the actor is still planning on doing it. In a recent interview with Yahoo, Tatum gave an update on the project and said that they are rethinking the direction they want to take it because the success of Logan and Deadpool opened doors for them and allow them to do more. He explains:
“We got really lucky. We had a first draft it was good, but we were coming to at a time at that creative phase of [the X-Men], where these movies went through a bit of a paradigm shift, where the X-Men movies and the superhero movies with ‘Logan’ and ‘Deadpool’ really broke down a lot of doors for us. We were trying to do some things that we actually weren’t allowed to do, and they just smashed down the doors, so we’re giving it a bit of a rethink.”
Does this mean they are looking to try to take Gambit down the R-rated road? No. Tatum says:
“We’re not quite going there, because I enjoyed Gambit as a kid so I don’t want to rule out PG-13.”
But they obviously are looking to take it to a darker level. I'm sure they are also looking to experiment with a few things in bringing the character back to life on the big screen. He didn't reveal anything else, so at this point, it's all speculation.
Personally, I don't care what the rating is. I just want to see a great Gambit movie! Magic Mike writer Reid Carolin wrote the most recent draft of the script, but it has yet to be seen if that's the script they'll move forward with. Doug Liman (Edge of Tomorrow) and Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) have both been attached to direct the film, but they've both dropped out.
I hope the movie gets made! There's definitely a bunch of fans that want to see it happen, so hopefully it does.
