CHAOS ORIGINS Continues an Amazing Year for YU-GI-OH!
At the beginning of this month, Konami released an amazing new booster set for the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game. Chaos Origins is the first core set released since Rise of Destiny in 2004 to feature Yugi (or more accurately Yami Yugi/Atem) from the Duel Monsters anime on the cover.
Alongside Yami Yugi on the cover is a retrain of one of his iconic monsters, Magician of Black Chaos, now titled Magician of Dark Chaos - Black Chaos (I’m not a fan of the “- Black Chaos” part because it just seems like a weird addition)!
Inside is the new Light and Darkness Ritual to go with the Magician of Dark Chaos - Black Chaos as well as a retrain of the iconic Black Luster Soldier (my favorite card ever!) titled Black Luster Soldier - Soldier of Light and Darkness and retrains of other iconic Yugi cards to bolster the strategy.
These include Summoned Skull as Skull Archfiend of Chaos, Celtic Guardian as Celtic Mystic, and Griffoh (what appears to be a Kuriboh in a Griffore costume). My only question is why hasn’t Louise (aka the poorly renamed Beaver Warrior for the TCG) received any kind of retrain? That would have been really fun.
Regardless, this new strategy is already proving itself in the meta of the TCG and Genesys, and it’s not the only strategy that’s being used from Chaos Origins.
The fan favorite Sacred Beasts got new support that’s pretty cool and the Angelechy archetype is amazing! I personally enjoyed using the latter in my local OTS’ pre-release tournament. I cannot wait to see what the second wave of support with the queen and bishop will include.
And let’s not forget another new archetype: Blitzclique. This strategy saw a massive showing at the recent North America WCQ Genesys tournament. It took up half of the Top 32 slots there and also made huge appearances at the European and Oceanic events. Not to mention that Blitzclique won all three Genesys tournaments!
2026 has been a really good year for Yu-Gi-Oh! if we’re being honest, and Chaos Origins has been peak! The retrains are awesome. The Angelechy archetype is fantastic. The full art cards and starlight rares are gorgeous! I don’t know that I can really come up with a bad thing to say about this set.
You can check out my opening of a single 24-pack box below that Konami was kind enough to send me, and I look forward to Magnificent Monsters (although I’m still not thrilled about the price) on September 4.
What’s your favorite card from Chaos Origins? Do you think Konami will release black chess pieces as a rival or complimentary archetype of Xyz Monsters?
