Chaosium Launches CALL OF CTHULHU Kickstarter to Celebrate 40 Years of the RPG
Chaosium released the original edition of the tabletop RPG Call of Cthulhu in 1981. To celebrate 40 years of the game, the team recently launched a Kickstarter with remastered versions of the original boxed set and five of the first supplements. Included are the rulebook, sourcebook, world map, character sheets, and the following items:
Shadows of Yog Sothoth (80 pages), a global campaign to save mankind. The first of its kind.
The Asylum & Other Tales (72 pages), seven shorter sinister scenarios set around the world and at sea.
The Cthulhu Companion (64 pages), four scenarios as well as added rules and source material.
Trail of the Tsathogghua (64 pages), a mini campaign of two scenarios, plus a third adventure. It's world spanning, and thus all over the place.
Fragments of Fear (72 pages), additional gods, background, and other material, as well as a bonus scenario.
Talking about the remaster boxed set, Rick Meints said:
Because we want to deliver these boxed sets in time for the anniversary later this year, we've already got all of these books and boxes ready to print. If this Kickstarter gets funded, within a week of ending, we're going to be sending out ALL of the PDFs to the backers. All of the files will be off to the printer shortly after that. No waiting on writers, or artists or layout to get this done. We print. We ship.
While none of us can banish forever the specter of risks and challenges, we have invoked powerful protections to greatly reduce the chances of unleashing any chaos or destruction upon this project. Most importantly, the items included in this Kickstarter are not in development. They are ready to print. This is about reprinting and celebrating a classic version of our favorite horror RPG. We'll be fulfilling this from our five existing warehouses in the UK, US, EU, Canada, and Australia.
We scanned in near mint condition original printed products. The art was cleaned up. The text was OCR'd and thoroughly checked. Original typos were corrected and all errata was incorporated into the text. The layout was redone in a style very very similar to the originals, but standardized across all of the books. Bonus material was added, such as designer's notes, bonus scenarios, articles from various sources, some history, plus a few other surprises. You get all of the original material, neatly laid out, and as searchable PDFs.
In addition, the campaign has crushed its goals and at the time of this writing is just shy of $300,000. As such, the first two stretch goals which feature the original Keeper Screen, and a set of dice included in every Classic Boxed set have already been unlocked.
