There's a Spider-Man 2099 Easter Egg in SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE That Will Have a Ripple Effect in Next Film
We first got to see the character Spider-Man 2099 in the post credits scene of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, the first film in the animated franchise trilogy, where the character, also known as Miguel O'Hara (voiced by Oscar Isaac), is seen talking to Lyla, who is telling Miguel that he is about to be the first person, or last, to make an autonomous multiverse jump.
Miguel returned in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, where he was the film’s big bad guy. In the story, Miguel/Spider-Man 2099 was heading up the Spider Society, a collection of Spider-Variants from various Earths in the greater multiverse tasked with maintaining universes' stabilities by ensuring canon events throughout the multiverse occur as planned, like Uncle Ben and Captain Stacy dying.
For Miles Morales, his canon event is his father dying shortly after he is promoted to police captain. With this knowledge combined with his dad, Jefferson Davis’s looming promotion, Miles goes against Spider Society's commands and attempts to flee back to his universe to save his father. In the process, Miles destroys Miguel's digital suit, short-circuiting it with his bioelectric powers.
But that doesn’t spell the end of Miguel, not that easily. An Easter Egg was spotted in Miguel's lab, Spider-Man 2099's white suit is snuck into the background of a shot. While his blue and red suit is his most iconic look, Spider-Man 2099's white look is actually a more advanced version of his original suit.
This suit was confirmed to be a deliberate Easter egg in the Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse digital release, as character designer Kris Anka specifically described the concealed costume as Spider-Man 2099's "white second suit." So that means we surely have not seen the last of Miguel O’Hara’s Spider-Man 2099. How are you hoping to see Miles defeat this foe in Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse?
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is available on digital release now.
