Charlie Cox Admits That Ben Affleck's DAREDEVIL Was Really Good, But His Suit Sucked
Charlie Cox’s Marvel character Daredevil is back in the spotlight. After the three season run of the Daredevil series on Netflix, the character Matt Murdock was M.I.A. until he returned in the most recent Marvel movie, Spider-Man: No Way Home. Now he’s back in the MCU, and his series is making the jump to Disney+. It feels like we are gearing up to see more of Cox’s Daredevil. But as some of us remember, he’s not the first actor to don the “DD” emblazoned suit.
Back in 2003, Oscar-winner Ben Affleck played the part, and while the movie was widely panned, Cox has a mixed review of the movie. In a recent panel at the Middle East Film and Comic Con in Abu Dabi (via The Direct), Cox was asked if he’d seen the film before getting the TV series role. He responded:
"No, after I got the role. I hadn't seen it before I got the role. I watched it when I got the role and, to be fair… I think Ben Affleck does a really good Matt Murdock, I like his Matt Murdock… I don't love the movie…"
He went on to explain:
"I feel like the movie tried to do too much and it was a little tonally confused. They had everyone in that movie, they had Kingpin, they had Bullseye, they had Elektra, they had Karen Page, they had Foggy. It was saturated and it's two hours. So that was part of that problem. And the suit sucks!"
All totally fair points. Cox told ComicBook recently that he didn’t have a huge preference as to what exactly his future suit would look like, but his only requirement was that it would eventually bear the beloved "DD" insignia.
"What I would say is I've always liked the idea that at some point in Matt's journey, his emotional journey, and again, I don't know how everything is happening, or what might happen, and how it ties into what we've already done, I have no idea at all. But I've always liked the idea that at some point he feels like he has earned the right to have the DD [on his chest,] which we've never had."
I think he has earned it, for sure. I loved the Daredevil series, and I can’t wait to see what Charlie Cox gets to do with the character next.
