Charlie Cox Discusses DAREDEVIL: BORN AGAIN Says "It Will Be Dark But Probably Not as Gory"
Marvel fans have been very curious about what the new Daredevil: Born Again series will bring, especially now that it’s a Disney+ show. We also got a little taste of the new version of Charlie Cox’s Daredevil in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law and he certainly had a very different and lighter tone.
The new series will consist of 18 episodes, and Cox recently revealed in an interview with NME that he will spend nearly all of 2023 shooting the Marvel project. It will be an 11-month month production! He said: “They said to me, ‘We’re going to be shooting in 2023’. I said, ‘Great, when?’ They said, ‘All 2023’. I start shooting in February and finish in December.”
This will make Daredevil: Born Again the biggest Marvel project on Disney+ so far. When talking about the tone of the series, he said he thought it will be like an old-school procedural:
“I’m fascinated to discover why they’ve chosen to do 18. I’m imagining there’s going to be an element to it that is like the old-school procedural show. Not necessarily case-of-the-week, but something where we go really deep into Matt Murdock the lawyer and get to see what his life is like. If that’s done right and he really gets his hands dirty with that world… I think there’s something quite interesting about that.”
The big question on a lot of fans’ minds is if this new series will be as dark and gritty as the Netflix version of the show, which was awesome! I was hoping to see that story continue and see more of that style, but I don’t think that will be the case. Cox says that his believes the new show will be dark but not gory. He explains:
“My opinion is this character works best when he’s geared towards a slightly more mature audience. My instinct is that on Disney+ it will be dark but it probably won’t be as gory. I would say to [people hoping the Disney+ show copies the Netflix show], we’ve done that. Let’s take the things that really worked, but can we broaden? Can we appeal to a slightly younger audience without losing what we’ve learned about what works?”
I’m sure they can, but they have to be really smart about it. I just hope that they don’t go goofy with it, which is something Marvel is doing a lot more of these days. Cox previously talked a little bit about what he would like to see in the upcoming Daredevil series and shared some things he’d like to see that they weren’t able to do in the Netflix series. He specifically points out that he wants there to be more acrobatics.
"Hopefully, on the Disney Plus show, Born Again, we will be able to use – and I hope that we do it sparingly, I believe it should be used sparingly – but we'll hopefully be able to use a tiny bit more CGI in the action sequences. Just to emphasize his gymnastic abilities that have been basically impossible to do.”
Cox went on to explain why we would like to see this in the new series, saying, "These little moments would elevate scenes and be something that makes the show even more recognizable to the comics.”
The series is being written and executive produced by Covert Affairs creators Matt Corman and Chris Ord. The 18-episode season of Daredevil: Born Again is slated to premiere sometime in 2024.
