Charlie Vickers Says THE RINGS OF POWER Season 3 Delivers a Cool Take on the Forging of the One Ring
We've seen the One Ring cause all kinds of trouble across Middle-earth, but we've never really gotten the full story of how Sauron created the most dangerous piece of jewelry in fantasy history.
That's going to change in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 3, and Charlie Vickers says fans are in for something pretty cool.
The upcoming season of Prime Video's fantasy series will finally explore Sauron's journey toward forging the One Ring, giving fans a closer look at a major moment in J.R.R. Tolkien's mythology that Peter Jackson only briefly depicted in his original Lord of the Rings trilogy.
Speaking with ComicBook, Vickers explained why he's particularly excited for audiences to see this part of Sauron's story.
“I think this season, it’s kind of like his journey to making the Ring. And if I think of myself as a fan who was never involved in this, the thing that I would be most excited to see from this series would probably be the forging of the One Ring because it’s kind of this pop culture thing.
“Everyone knows about the One Ring when it comes to Lord of the Rings…To see how he made it, I think we’ve done quite a cool interpretation of it.”
Fans already know what the One Ring eventually becomes and the destruction it brings to Middle-earth.
What makes this interesting is getting to watch Sauron figure out how to create it in the first place.
Season 3 also has plenty of other developments coming, including Jamie Campbell Bower joining the series as Celeborn.
His arrival could make things particularly uncomfortable for Galadriel and Sauron, with trailers hinting at a possible love triangle involving the three characters.
But Sauron's obsession with creating the One Ring appears to be one of the biggest parts of the new season, and showrunners Patrick McKay and JD Payne want audiences to see more than the terrifying Dark Lord they remember from the movies.
When asked what viewers should understand about Sauron this season, McKay offered a simple answer: “He’s a being.”
Payne expanded on that idea, explaining: “With aspirations and insecurities, and the idea that he’s not just a flaming eye in the sky, but he’s a person who wants to make a ring.
“And what is that going to take out of him? You know, you get to see him starting off the season and not knowing how to do it.”
That's an interesting direction for Sauron. Instead of presenting him as an all-powerful villain who already has everything figured out,
The Rings of Power will show him struggling to accomplish something that eventually defines his entire existence.
We know he's going to succeed, but watching him work through the challenges of creating the One Ring could make for some great storytelling, especially with Vickers getting more room to explore the character's ambitions and insecurities.
McKay and Payne also suggested that Sauron's journey in Season 3 might change how fans view the character when they revisit Jackson's films.
After spending more time with him as an actual character rather than a giant flaming eye, audiences may see the Dark Lord a little differently.
It’s an exciting that we are finally getting to witness one of the most important events in Lord of the Rings history play out in greater detail.
The forging of the One Ring has always been a defining part of Tolkien's story, and now we'll get to see what it takes for Sauron to pull it off.
