Charlize Theron is an Immortal Ax-Wielding Warrior in New Photos From THE OLD GUARD
We’ve got a couple of new photos to share with you for Netflix’s upcoming fantasy action-thriller The Old Guard. The movie is based on the graphic novel series by Greg Rucka which was illustrated by Leandro Fernandez.
One of the new photos features Charlize Theron as an immortal warrior named Andy a.k.a. Andromache the Scythian, “an ancient warrior who can be as deadly with a handgun as she is with her signature ax.” You can see her wielding the two-handed battle-ax in the photo. When talking about her training to fight with that thing, she told EW:
“I’ve never had to do anything like that. You have to learn to fight with that ginormous thing in a way where you don’t kill the person that you’re fighting with… I had the most incredible shoulders after.”
The movie has been described as “a gritty, grounded, action-packed story that shows living forever is harder than it looks.”
It also stars Kiki Layne, Marwan Kenzari, LucaMarinelli, Harry Melling, Van Veronica Ngo, with Matthias Schoenaerts, and Chiwetel Ejiofor. If you’re not familiar with the story, here’s the synopsis:
Led by a warrior named Andy (Charlize Theron), a covert group of tight-knit mercenaries with a mysterious inability to die have fought to protect the mortal world for centuries. But when the team is recruited to take on an emergency mission and their extraordinary abilities are suddenly exposed, it’s up to Andy and Nile (Kiki Layne), the newest soldier to join their ranks, to help the group eliminate the threat of those who seek to replicate and monetize their power by any means necessary.
It’s also explained that this small team of immortals are impervious to injury or illness. “They’ve spent the last few centuries brushing up on their battle skills.” The new addition to the team, Niles, finds a “reluctant mentor in Andy, as the two women bond over the loneliness of immortality.” When talking about the characters of Andy and Nile, director Gina Prince-Bythewood (Love & Basketball) explained:
“They are warriors. [I wanted] to be able to reframe what it means to be a female with this film and make that a normal thing: our toughness and badassness and courage. To normalize that was really important to me.”
The Old Guard sounds like it’ll end up being an awesome movie and it will be released on Netflix on July 10th.
