Chevy Chase Says COMMUNITY "Wasn't Funny Enough" and He Didn't Want to Be “Surrounded by…Those People”
It’s no secret Chevy Chase has a reputation for being hard to work with, and it seems his time on the hit sitcom Community wasn’t a pleasant one as he had issues with series creator Dan Harmon. During a recent interview on Mark Maron’s WTF podcast, Chase talked about his time on Community, and he’s pretty blunt with his thoughts saying he didn’t think the show was funny enough for him. He said:
“I honestly felt the show wasn’t funny enough for me, ultimately. I felt a little bit constrained. Everybody had their bits, and I thought they were all good. It just wasn’t hard-hitting enough for me.”
He went on to talk about his character, Pierce Hawthorn, and while he was fine with the character, he didn’t like being surrounded by “those people.” He said:
“I didn’t mind the character. I just felt that it was… I felt happier being alone. I just didn’t want to be surrounded by that table, every day, with those people. It was too much.”
Chase was a part of the series for four seasons before he ended up leaving, and when previously asked about the accusations about how he was a jerk while working on the show, he told CBS Sunday Morning:
“I guess you’d have to ask them. I don’t give a crap! I am who I am. And I like where— who I am. I don’t care. And it’s part of me that I don’t care. And I’ve thought about that a lot. And I don’t know what to tell you, man. I just don’t care.”
One of Chase’s most talked about and controversial outbursts on the set of the series involved him using the N-word during a heated argument with Harmon regarding his character. As you might imagine, the outburst upset the cast.
Chase and Harmon haven’t seen each other since he left the show. When talking about his relationship with Harmon, he said: “I have no idea if we’re OK. I’ve never been not OK. He’s kind of a pisser.”
