Chloé Zhao Reacts to BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER Revival Cancellation Saying She Was “Not Surprised”
Fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer were hit with some disappointing news this weekend. The planned revival series Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale has officially been scrapped by Hulu. The update came straight from Sarah Michelle Gellar, who shared the cancellation with fans on Instagram after months of anticipation surrounding the project.
Now Chloé Zhao, the Oscar-winning filmmaker who directed the revival’s pilot episode, has addressed the decision publicly, and while the news stunned a lot of fans, she says it didn’t exactly catch her off guard.
Zhao spoke about the situation while attending the 2026 Oscars, where she was there for her film Hamnet. During the red carpet interviews, she reflected on the experience of working on the revival and her thoughts on Hulu deciding not to move forward with the series.
She said she was “not surprised” by the Buffy revival’s cancellation, and then added:
“I had an incredible, incredible time with Sarah [Michelle Gellar], with all the cast and crew doing this. And we, first and foremost, see ourselves as the guardians of the original show.
“Our priority for Sarah and for us has always been to be truthful to the show, to be truthful to our fans. So, things happen for a reason, and we keep our hearts open and we welcome the mystery. And what this might lead us to.”
While Zhao’s perspective is philosophical, the cancellation itself has raised plenty of eyebrows. Revivals and legacy continuations have been performing well across streaming platforms, and a return to the world of Buffy seemed like something that would almost certainly move forward, especially with Gellar involved.
For years she had turned down offers to return to the role of Buffy Summers, so her willingness to step back into the franchise made the project feel like a safe bet.
The pilot for Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale was directed by Zhao and written by Nora Zuckerman and Lilla Zuckerman. According to reports, Hulu ultimately passed because of a lack of confidence in the pilot.
The story is said to have focused primarily on a new generation of characters rather than Buffy herself. The narrative reportedly centered on Ryan Kiera Armstrong, who plays a new Slayer named Nova.
In this version of the story, Buffy Summers was expected to appear only near the end of the pilot, with the idea that she would eventually serve as a mentor figure to the new Slayer.
From a storytelling standpoint, that approach could have helped introduce the franchise to a younger audience while still honoring the legacy of the original series. But if Buffy barely appeared in the pilot, it’s possible that decision made Hulu hesitant about committing to the show. For now, that remains speculation.
Despite the cancellation, the door might not be fully closed. When Zhao was asked if she and Gellar planned to pitch the show to other platforms, she kept her response short and cryptic, simply repeating: “Welcome the mystery.”
That situation could be complicated because the rights to the franchise sit with 20th Television. According to reports, Hulu still values the Buffy intellectual property and may explore a different approach in the future. The studio reportedly plans to regroup and consider a new version of the beloved series.
What that means for Gellar’s involvement is unclear. She finally agreed to revisit the role after years of declining revival ideas, so having the project fall apart at this stage could make her hesitant to try again.
There’s also the possibility that Hulu may decide to pursue a complete reboot instead of a continuation that connects the old and new casts.
Still, many fans would argue that any Buffy project needs Gellar involved in some way. Buffy Summers remains the heart of the franchise, and even if the story eventually shifts toward a new generation of Slayers, her presence still feels essential.
The Buffy universe has already shown us that death rarely means the end. So while Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale may be gone for now, the franchise might not stay buried for long.
In the meantime, Buffy the Vampire Slayer is currently available to stream on Hulu.
