Chris Columbus Talks About The "Twisted and Dark" Script For GREMLINS 3
We've known that Chris Columbus has been working on a script for Gremlins 3 for a few years. Well, he has a completed script for the film and he recently talked about it and revealed some details in an interview with /Film.
This is a project that I've been pretty excited about. I'd love to revisit this story and the characters that fill it. We previously learned that story would take 30 years after the original film and it would continue that story. We also heard that Gremlins star Zack Galligan would reprise his role as Billy.
When talking about the script that has been written, Columbus says:
“I’m really proud of the script. It is as twisted and dark as anything, so we’ll see. It’s always a budgetary conversation when we’re going to shoot it. I wanted to go back to the really twisted sensibility of the first movie. I found that was a very easy place for me to fall back into and start writing again so hopefully we’ll see that movie soon.”
That's so good to hear. I absolutely love the first movie and bringing that twisted sensibility back to the third film is one of the things that the franchise needs to thrive.
Columbus goes on to say that the movie will explore some ethical issues, like killing Gizmo. If they got rid of Gizmo, then it would eliminate the possibility of him reproducing evil spawn when getting wet or being fed after midnight. He then goes on to say:
“I think it's probably is a good idea to be honest with you, Too many people are dying.”
So over the past 30 years, the evil Gremlins have been out causing havoc and killing people!? If too many people are dying then, of course, one option would be to eliminate the source, which would be Gizmo.
This obviously raises some ethical issues as it's not really Gizmo's fault, it's because obviously, humans don't know how to take care of him properly! Regardless, a plot point like this would make for an interesting story element.
Columbus goes on to say that when the movie gets made, the plan is to shoot the film with practical effect and only use minimal CGI.
“Oh, without a doubt, minimal CGI. CGI will enable us to remove wires and make the puppeteers lives a little easier. It was brutal. It was like a marathon every night for those guys. In the bar scene alone there were 18 [or] 20 people behind the bar. No one had any space to move. It was just hellish for those guys so CGI will simplify that a little bit but it’s all puppets.”
That's so great to hear! I love they will be using puppets and practical effects to bring these creatures to life in the third film. They could so easily go the CGI route, but they are choosing not to.
There's no word on when Gremlins 3 will be released but it's in active development at Warner Bros.
