Chris Evans Admits He Might Be Team Iron Man 10 Years After CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR
It’s been a decade since Captain America: Civil War tore the Avengers apart, and Chris Evans may finally be switching sides. Steve Rogers, aka Captain America, led his own team in the film against Iron Man, but Evans himself now admits Tony Stark might have had the better argument.
The 2016 Marvel movie turned a superhero showdown into an ideological fight over who should keep the Avengers in check. Following the destruction of Sokovia in Avengers: Age of Ultron, Tony Stark supported the Sokovia Accords, which would place the team under United Nations oversight.
Steve Rogers wanted nothing to do with it. Captain America had already seen what could happen when powerful organizations became compromised, and he wasn’t willing to hand over the Avengers’ ability to decide when and where they should act.
That disagreement eventually exploded into Team Iron Man vs. Team Cap, with pretty much every major MCU hero at the time choosing a side.
Ten years later, Evans has reconsidered where he personally lands. During the new Countdown to Avengers: Doomsday podcast, host and Ms. Marvel star Iman Vellani asked Evans whether his opinion on the conflict had changed since making the film.
Evans explained: "You know, as the character I stand by Team Cap's position," he replied. "Me personally? You know, I might be Team Iron Man. I know that's probably controversial to say, but you know?"
Steve Rogers would probably have some words for him. It’s also easy to understand why the debate remains interesting a decade later. Neither side had a particularly clean answer.
Stark believed people with that much power needed accountability, especially after what happened in Sokovia. Rogers feared that handing control to governments would mean political agendas could determine which crises deserved intervention. That argument has aged surprisingly well.
Evans has once again stepped into Steve Rogers’ boots with Avengers: Doomsday, where he is returning to the MCU as Steve.
This time, the character is said to be following his Nomad storyline. Steve has become disillusioned with representing a single country and instead operates as a man without one.
How that version of Captain America fits into a story involving Doctor Doom remains unclear, but we’ll find out when Avengers: Doomsday arrives on December 18.
