Chris Evans Cast as the Sinister Dentist in LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS Remake
Chris Evans has been cast in director Greg Berlanti’s upcoming remake of the classic musical Little Shop of Horrors. In fact, he will take on the role of dentist Orin Scrivello, Audrey’s abusive and sadistic boyfriend who finds great pleasure in being a dentist.
This is a great role that was perfectly played by Steve Martin in the 1986 film. While I like Evans, I don’t see him doing a better job than Martin in the role. But I am curious to see what his take on the character will be. Evans has played a comedic dark character before as Lucas Lee in Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World. That’s the one character he’s played that offers some insight into how he might play the dentist in the story.
The film is set up at Warner Bros. and Scarlett Johansson and Taron Egerton are circling lead roles of Audrey and Seymour. Billy Porter already signed up to play man-eating alien plant Audrey 2.
Little Shop of Horrors tells the story of Seymour, “a meek florist who works at the aptly named Skid Row Florists, where he is under the thumb of the owner, Mr. Mushnik, but where he also is secretly in love with Audrey, who also works at the struggling shop. Seymour becomes a celebrity when discovers a venus flytrap-looking plant he dubs Audrey II, but his life becomes disastrously complicated when the plant demands to be fed human blood, and then eventually people themselves.”
Marc Platt, Sarah Schechter, and Berlanti are producing the new adaptation which will shoot this summer. You can watch Martin perform the scene-stealing song “Dentist!” in the video clip below. While you watch, imagine Evans doing this and tell us if you think he’s a good fit for the role.
