Chris Evans Confirms Marvel Hid His AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY Return Under the Name “Luke Cage”
Marvel went pretty far to keep Chris Evans and his return as Steve Rogers in Avengers: Doomsday a secret. In fact, anyone getting their hands on a leaked script or call sheet might have thought Luke Cage was running around the movie instead of Captain America.
Evans recently revealed that Marvel used “Luke Cage” as a code name for Steve Rogers throughout the production of Avengers: Doomsday, giving fans a fun peek at just how seriously the studio treated the secrecy surrounding his MCU comeback.
While speaking with fans at Fan Expo Boston, Evans explained that the fake name wasn’t limited to the screenplay. Marvel apparently carried the Luke Cage cover story across multiple parts of the production.
“Within the script, my character was called Luke Cage just in case things leaked,” Evans said.
It even extended to the daily call sheets and the way crew members referred to Evans while filming. “On the call sheets, I was called Luke Cage. Even on set, they’d say, ‘Luke Cage is travelling.’ It was such a locked-down thing.”
That’s a pretty funny mental image. Somewhere on the Doomsday production, crew members were apparently talking about Luke Cage moving around the set while Chris Evans was actually preparing to suit up as Steve Rogers again.
The secrecy makes sense considering how much speculation surrounded Evans before his return was officially revealed. Reports had circulated for months that he would once again play Steve Rogers, but Evans repeatedly denied that he was coming back. Marvel eventually ended the mystery when his involvement was revealed in the first Avengers: Doomsday teaser.
Evans later talked about his decision to return during CinemaCon 2026, explaining that simply putting Steve Rogers back on screen wasn’t enough to get him interested. There needed to be a meaningful reason for the character to enter the fight again.
“I said I would only come back if there was a real reason, and in Doomsday, there’s a very real reason why these heroes need Steve Rogers,” he said.
That comment makes his role in Doomsday particularly interesting. Steve’s story reached what felt like a natural conclusion in Avengers: Endgame, so bringing him back immediately raises some big questions about what could be serious enough to require Captain America’s return.
The footage that we’ve seen from the film we saw an intriguing piece of the puzzle by featuring Steve reuniting with Thor. Exactly how Steve fits into the larger story remains under wraps, and Marvel clearly wants to keep as much of that information hidden as possible. Considering the whole Luke Cage operation, that shouldn’t come as much of a surprise.
Evans will be joining a massive collection of Marvel characters in Avengers: Doomsday. Pedro Pascal returns as Reed Richards, Paul Rudd is back as Scott Lang, Florence Pugh reprises her role as Yelena Belova, and Robert Downey Jr. steps into the MCU as Doctor Doom.
Joe Russo and Anthony Russo are directing both Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, with the two films bringing Marvel Studios’ Multiverse Saga toward its conclusion.
Of course, the big question now is exactly why these heroes need Steve Rogers. Marvel managed to keep Evans hidden behind a Luke Cage code name during production, so there are probably still plenty of surprises the studio doesn’t want getting out.
Whatever Steve is being pulled into, it apparently takes something pretty serious to convince him to return. And after Endgame, Marvel has a lot to live up to if it wants his comeback to hit as hard as it should.
Avengers: Doomsday is currently scheduled to hit theaters on December 18, 2027.
