Chris Evans Doesn't Rule Out Playing Captain America Again, But It Would Have To Be Under The Right Circumstances

After Captain America’s long Infinity Saga story arc came to a close with Avengers: Endgame, I never expected to see Chris Evans reprise his role. I assumed that was it for him, and it probably is, but in a recent conversation with the actor, he doesn’t rule out playing Captain America again. It would just have to be under the right circumstances and make sense for the character.

During a conversation with Scarlett Johansson for Variety‘s Actors on Actors issue, the conversation turned to Evans’ possible return as Steve Rogers. Johansson asked if he would come back to the role, and his response was:

“You never say never. I love the character. I don’t know. It’s not a hard no, but it’s not an eager yes either. There are other things that I’m working on right now. I think Cap had such a tricky act to stick the landing, and I think they did a really nice job letting him complete his journey. If you’re going to revisit it, it can’t be a cash grab. It can’t be just because the audience wants to be excited. What are we revealing? What are we adding to the story? A lot of things would have to come together.”

So, there would have to be a really good reason for Evans to return to the role of Steve Rogers. Meanwhile, Endgame writers Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus are against bringing Cap back, saying that it would cheapen his final moments in Endgame. They tell ScreenRant:

“I love writing for Cap, I love Evans. But I really feel, much like Tony, we got them to a place where they don’t need to do it anymore. I’d hate to gin up something hokey to get them back.”

If Cap ever does come back, that’s a decision that will come from Marvel’s Kevin Feige and Chris Evans. As much as I love Captain America, I’ll be fine if we never see him in the MCU again. His story arc in the Infinity Saga was awesome and they gave him a wonderful ending. But, if they did decide to explore the character more in some way… of course, I’m going to watch whatever Marvel delivers!
