Chris Hemsworth Reportedly Set to Voice Optimus Prime in Michael Bay’s New TRANSFORMERS Movie
Could Chris Hemsworth be playing Optimus Prime again? A new rumor suggests the Marvel star could be taking over the iconic Autobot leader in Michael Bay’s upcoming live-action Transformers movie.
Hemsworth voiced Orion Pax, the younger version of Optimus Prime, in the 2024 animated film Transformers One. Now, a report from Beyond Reporter on X claims the actor will return to voice Optimus Prime in Bay's upcoming eighth live-action Transformers installment.
If true, it would be an interesting direction for the franchise, especially following the death of legendary voice actor Peter Cullen, who passed away on August 26 at the age of 85.
Cullen was the definitive voice of Optimus Prime for decades, bringing the heroic Autobot leader to life across animated series, movies, and video games. Replacing him is a massive responsibility, and whoever takes on the role will have some pretty big shoes to fill.
Hemsworth has experience with the character, although his performance in Transformers One was intentionally different from Cullen's. The filmmakers cast him to portray a younger, less experienced Orion Pax, giving the character more personality, youthful enthusiasm, and a little recklessness before he became the legendary Autobot leader.
His performance was well received by audiences, and it would be cool to hear how Hemsworth approaches a more mature version of Optimus Prime. However, there's a pretty big reason to be skeptical of this casting rumor.
Neither Paramount Pictures nor anyone officially involved with the production has confirmed Hemsworth's involvement. Beyond Reporter also makes it clear in its X bio that they're “not an insider/scooper” but rather “just a messenger.”
Some social media users have even traced the original claim to a parody account, which makes the report even harder to take seriously. For now, Hemsworth's supposed casting should be treated strictly as a rumor.
Meanwhile, Bay is returning to the Transformers franchise after directing five live-action installments, ending his original run with 2017's Transformers: The Last Knight.
His return raises plenty of questions about what direction the franchise will take, particularly when it comes to Optimus Prime and the other Autobots. One of the biggest questions is who will take over the character's voice following Cullen's passing.
Hemsworth would be an interesting choice, and if the report turns out to be accurate, he would become the first actor to portray Optimus Prime in both animated and live-action Transformers movies.
Of course, there's also the question of whether fans would embrace a new voice for a character so closely associated with Cullen.
I enjoyed Hemsworth's performance in Transformers One, but hearing him as the fully realized Optimus Prime in a Michael Bay movie would be a very different experience.
What do you think? Would Chris Hemsworth be a good choice to take over as Optimus Prime, or would you rather see someone else step into the role?
