Chris Pine and Chris Hemsworth Exit STAR TREK 4 as Negotiations Fall Apart
Well, here's something that I didn't see coming! THR is reporting that Chris Pine and Chris Hemsworth have walked away from Star Trek 4 after negotiations fell apart.
It's going to be really hard to make a fourth Star Trek film without them because it was supposed to revolve around their two characters! According to inside sources, "talks between the two actors and the companies making the new installment, Paramount Pictures and Skydance Media, have fallen apart, with both sides walking away from the table."
That's crazy! In case you're wondering what it was that they couldn't come to an agreement on, it was money. It's explained that "Pine and Hemsworth, among Hollywood’s A-list when starring in DC or Marvel movies, are said to be asking the studios to stick to existing deals. Paramount, according to insiders, contends that Trek is not like a Marvel or Star Wars movie and is trying to hold the line on a budget."
It's being said that the studio is reneging on the deals that were already in place and were forcing Pine and Hemsworth to take pay cuts to keep the costs in line with the budget.
I can see and understand what each of the parties are coming from and each one has their reason to fight for what they believe is the right thing to do. Ultimately, neither side was willing to budge or make compromises.
It's not like either of the actors needs the job. They've both been keeping very busy. You know who needs a big movie hit, though? Paramount Pictures. Star Trek is their biggest and most popular film franchises and it seems like it would be a big deal if they lost it.
There's no information on what will happen next or what the next step is for Star Trek 4. They could always recast Kirk and his father, but that just seems like a dumb idea. Who knows, maybe after some cooling off time the two sides could come back to the table and try to work something out again.
It'll be interesting to see how this unfolds over the next few months. If things don't work out, at least we've got a bunch of great Star Trek series coming to CBS All Access!
