Chris Pratt Recalls Championing His Friend James Gunn When He Was Fired From Marvel - "Dude, This Is Not Over"
Back in the summer of 2018, filmmaker James Gunn was fired by Marvel under the Disney banner for resurfaced Tweets that were deemed offensive.
The director of the Guardians of the Galaxy films was fired between volumes 2 and 3, and it was announced that he would not return for the final film in the trilogy. Over the next eight months, Gunn’s cast members stood up for their friend, insisting he was a good guy who deserved to continue his job as director in the MCU.
After somewhat of an investigation, the studio decided to reinstate him, and we all know that he went on to finish his trilogy strong before moving on to head up DC Studios.
Chris Pratt, who plays Marvel’s Peter Quill aka Star-Lord, recently spoke out about that time in an interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, where he recalled:
“I remember it all very clearly. I remember talking to Lou D'Esposito at Marvel. And I don’t think Lou would mind me saying this, but he goes, ‘We gotta let him go.’ And I was like, ‘You’re making a mistake.
“You are making a mistake. You can’t, no. You can’t.’ He’s like, ‘Dude, it has to happen.’ And then it happened, and I reached out to James. I was like, ‘Dude, this is not over. This is not over.’ And I started, like at that point, just praying on it and strategizing.”
Pratt went on to talk about the resolution of his friend’s firing and rehiring, stating:
“At the end of the day, the credit for [James] coming back belongs to the folks at Marvel and to Alan Horn at Disney, because I think he just woke up one day and was like, ‘This is not right.’
“And I think there are certain people who do things that get them canceled, and then they behave in a way directly after that affirms that choice. I think James was incredibly classy the entire time and, from the outside, once the smoke settled and the dust settled and you looked at the situation, you realized that it was truly unfair. And so he got that job back because it was a glaring mistake to ever fire him for that.”
It all worked out for Gunn and the friends who spoke out on his behalf, and because of that, Gunn was able to finish his Marvel trilogy and head off to DC on a great note.
