Christian Bale Had to Isolate Himself From Chris Rock While Shooting AMSTERDAM Because He Was Too Funny

Christian Bale is a hell of a great actor, and when he takes on a role, he’s known to just disappear into it. That’s exactly what he does with his role in director David O’Russell’s Amsterdam. This is easily one of the best movie characters that Bale has played in his career, and it’s sure to earn him a lot of Best Actor award nominations come award season.

Well, to help give the best performance possible, Bale had to isolate himself from co-star Chris Rock because he was just too funny for him to be around and it was affecting his performance. In a recent interview with Indiewire, Bale explained:

“I remember his first day, I was excited to meet him, I’m a big fan of his standup. Then he arrives, and he’s doing some things. … David [O. Russell] told him to tell me some stories that I didn’t know he was gonna tell me, which is the way David works often. And I was loving it.

“But Chris is so bloody funny and I found that I couldn’t act, because I was just becoming Christian laughing at Chris Rock. So I had to go to him, I went ‘mate, I love talking to you, and we have mutual friends, but I can’t do it anymore. Because David didn’t ask me to make this film so he could just watch me giggle. He wants me to be Burt, and I’m forgetting how to be Burt.'

“I often meet these incredible people, but I isolate myself. Because if I get to know people too much, I find I just don’t believe what I’m doing in the scene.”

Every actor has their own way of working and apparently Bale just can’t be around people that make him laugh because it takes him out of his mindset. It’s totally understandable, and there’s no ill will between the two, Bale just want to make sure he was able to deliver the best performance possible in the film, and damn… he sure did give a great performance!
