Christopher McQuarrie Talks About His SUPERMAN and GREEN LANTERN Tie-In Movies That WB Rejected
When Warner Bros. and DC were still trying to figure out how to move forward with the DCEU and the Man of Steel sequel, there were reports that Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation and Fallout director Christopher McQuarrie was looking to make a Man of Steel sequel, and there was even talk of his involvement with a Green Lantern film.
Well, it turns out that he was actually working directly with Henry Cavill on an idea and pitch for Man of Steel 2, and that sequel would have tied directly into a Green Lantern movie! A fan reached out to the filmmaker on Twitter, and McQuarrie actually opened up a little bit about it.
Here’s what he said on Twitter:
Too complicated to explain. It tied into the Superman movie that Cavill and I were proposing. No takers.

The studios have never cared for my original ideas. They prefer that I fix their broken ones.
They never said no. They just never moved on it. This was just before Fallout was released. And no, I would not reconsider. There’s too many other things I want to do.

Green Lantern was a written proposal. Superman was a pitch.

It certainly could have.

It's like WB hates money.

It’s a shame that Warner Bros. rejected McQuarrie’s pitch and didn’t move forward with it. McQuarrie is proven to be a crazy talented filmmaker and storyteller; the fact that the studio didn’t want to work with him on this project confuses the hell out of me. But what’s done is done, and it seems Cavill’s reign as Superman has come to an end as the studio is currently developing a Supergirl film.
When WB and DC do finally decide to make a new Superman film one day, it will be interesting to see what that ends up being. Having an interconnected Superman and Green Lantern film, though, is a missed opportunity that I think fans would have loved to see.
Maybe the studio was just pissed off at McQuarrie for not letting Cavill shave his face for those Justice League reshoots.
