Christopher Nolan Recalls Story of Working with Al Pacino on INSOMNIA Explaining Why He's a Great Actor
Christopher Nolan recently shared a story from the time he was working with Al Pacino on the 2002 film Insomnia. I actually recently revisited that movie and I forgot how freakin’ good it was! If you haven’t watched it in awhile, it’s one you should revisit.
Insomnia is a psychological thriller that was a remake of the 1997 Norwegian movie of the same name. Al Pacino is a detective sent to a small Alaskan town to investigate a murder and is drawn into a game of cat and mouse with the suspect, who was played by the late Robin Williams.
Nolan recalled a time he confronted Pacino about something that he wanted him to do in film, a little note, and what Pacino’s response was. He said:
“I had gone up to Pacino after a series of takes and given him a note on what I wanted. He told me, ‘I’ve already done that. You can’t see it to the eye, but I’ve done it on the dailies.’ I looked for it, and I was like, ‘Oh, my God,’ because there it was.”
Nolan went on to say: “Great film actors can do that, and that’s what I had with Cillian.” Nolan worked with Cillian Murphy on the upcoming film Oppenheimer and it looks like the actor is going to deliver the best performance of his career in that movie.
