Christopher Nolan Says He Would Love to Make a Horror Movie
Oppenheimer and Tenet director Christopher Nolan has played with lots of different genres in the films that he makes, but one he has yet to tackle is a horror film. I would love to see Nolan make a horror movie, and he would love to make one! But, as of right now, he’s struggling to find the perfect idea for one.
While speaking at a BFI event in London, the filmmaker was asked by a member of the audience if he would ever consider making a horror movie, to which he replied:
”I’d love to make a horror film. But I think a really good horror film requires a really exceptional idea. And those are few and far between. So I haven’t found a story that lends itself to that.”
Nolan went on to talk about what he finds interesting about the horror genre, saying:
“But I think it’s a very interesting genre from a cinematic point of view. It’s also one of the few genres where the studios make a lot of these films, and they are films that have a lot of bleakness, a lot of abstraction. They have a lot of the qualities that Hollywood is generally very resistant to putting in films, but that’s a genre where it’s allowable.”
Nolan also said that Oppenheimer has horror elements as he thinks it ”is appropriate to the subject matter.” Really, though, the closest thing to traditional horror that we’ve seen from Nolan is the Scarecrow sequences from Batman Begins.
It would be fascinating to see what kind of horror story Nolan would tell. There are a lot of great untapped ideas out there, but we’ll just have to wait and see if he comes up with one of his own that he eventually moves forward with.
