Christopher Nolan's Next Film is a 35mm Short About Stop Motion Filmmakers

After Interstellar, it would be reasonable to assume that Christopher Nolan would want to tackle a project that's a bit smaller in scale for his next movie, but I don't think anyone predicted he'd go quite this small. Nolan's next film will be a 35mm short film about The Quay Brothers, identical twins Stephen and Timothy, who are stop motion filmmakers.

I've never seen any of the Quays' work (which, I suspect, is a large reason behind Nolan shining a light on it with his new short), but most of their films are dialogue-free and heavily influenced by Polish filmmakers. They've been making movies since the 1970s, and are recognized as some of the best artists who use the stop motion technique.

American identical twins working in London, stop motion animators Stephen and Timothy Quay (born 1947 in Norristown, Pennsylvania) find their inspiration in Eastern European literature and classical music and art, their work distinguished by its dark humor and an uncanny feeling for color and texture. Masters of miniaturization, they turn their tiny sets into unforgettable worlds suggestive of long-repressed childhood dreams.

If you live in New York City, you're in luck: Nolan's film — which looks at the inner-workings of the brothers' studio and is titled simply Quay — is playing on August 19th along with a selection of three Quay shorts hand-picked by Nolan himself, and the three of them will appear in conversation for the event at the Film Forum. Sounds like something worth checking out.
