Christopher Nolan’s THE ODYSSEY May Drop a Surprise IMAX 6-Minute Prologue This December
Fans heading back to theaters for upcoming IMAX screenings of Sinners and One Battle After Another might be in for something extra. Reportedly, there will be a nearly six minute prologue from Christopher Nolan’s upcoming epic The Odyssey could be added to those screenings in just a couple of weeks.
Reports from World of Reel claim that the prologue runs 5 minutes and 47 seconds and is set to debut with IMAX showings of the two acclaimed films starting December 11.
A fresh trailer for The Odyssey is also expected to appear ahead of Avatar: Fire and Ash when it lands in theaters on December 19th. For moviegoers who already planned to catch those titles on the biggest screens available, this is a pretty awesome bonus.
There is a good chance this preview is the same footage described in Empire Magazine’s recent deep dive into the film. Their story details how the clip opens with a single question, "You hear the story of the horse?" From there, the scene pulls audiences into the moment the enormous wooden horse is dragged with ropes toward the gates of Troy.
The deception unfolds quickly and chaos takes over once the soldiers hidden inside reveal themselves. According to the report, the prologue wraps with the appearance of a Cyclops, hinting at how big and mythic Nolan is going with this adaptation.
The Odyssey marks Nolan’s return after the enormous success of Oppenheimer, and he has assembled a stacked cast to bring Homer’s legendary tale to life.
Matt Damon leads the film as Odysseus, joined by Tom Holland as Telemachus, Anne Hathaway as Penelope, Zendaya as Athena, Mia Goth as Melantho, and Jon Bernthal as Agamemnon. The ensemble goes even further with appearances from Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, Benny Safdie, John Leguizamo, Elliot Page, and Himesh Patel.
Last month, Damon opened up about what it was like filming such an ambitious story, and his excitement says a lot about what the cast experienced. "I can say, without hyperbole, that it was the best experience of my career. I saw the horse on the beach and I was just like, 'F*ck.' It was just so cool.”
Nolan also confirmed just how massive this production has been. The director revealed he shot more than two million feet of film, which comes out to nearly 400 miles, and spent four months filming on the open ocean to capture the journey of Odysseus as authentically as possible.
The Odyssey reaches theaters on July 17, 2026.
