Cillian Murphy Reportedly Eyed for Villain Role in HARRY POTTER Series, but Not Who You Think

A fresh rumor is making waves in the Wizarding World fandom as HBO is reportedly looking at casting Cillian Murphy for a villain role in their upcoming Harry Potter TV series.

However, despite previous speculation, he’s not in talks to play Lord Voldemort. Instead, the rumor claims he’s being considered for a one-season role.

The scoop comes from industry insider Daniel Richtman, who, while not always spot-on, has a solid track record when it comes to entertainment leaks. According to Richtman: “Cillian Murphy is eyed to play Professor Quirinus Quirrell.”

Quirinus Quirrell is the Defense Against the Dark Arts professor in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (or Sorcerer’s Stone in the U.S.). He serves as the story’s primary antagonist, though his time in the series is short-lived.

This seems like it would be a fun role for Murphy to take on if true. He’s such a great actor and considering the character's duality as nervous and unassuming on the surface, yet harboring a sinister secret, it’s easy to see why HBO would want someone of Murphy’s caliber to take on the role.

Also, the role’s limited nature makes it a much more plausible for a big actor like Murphy to commit to it. Unlike playing Voldemort, which could require years of work, Quirrell would be a one-and-done villain, allowing Murphy to step in, steal the spotlight for a season, and move on without locking himself into a multi-year contract.

As exciting as this rumor is, it’s just a rumor and we have no idea of Murphy will actually end up in the role. HBO might want Murphy, but whether he’s interested (or available) is another story.

Until we get official confirmation, take this rumor with a grain of Floo Powder. But, what do you think about the possibility of Murphy playing this character?
