Cinema Therapy Explores Luke Skywalker's Character Journey

Cinema Therapy is a fun YouTube channel that features licensed therapist Jonathan Decker and filmmaker Alan Seawright as they talk about all kinds of movies. In a recent video, the pair decided to talk about everyone’s favorite Mary Sue, Luke Skywalker. Luke is the main character in the original Star Wars trilogy and when he was brought into the sequel trilogy via The Last Jedi, many fans were not happy. There was outcry saying that Rian Johnson had betrayed the character and ruined the franchise. I personally loved The Last Jedi and thought that the characterization felt reasonable.

Decker and Seawright take about 30 minutes to go through Luke’s journey as a human throughout the Star Wars saga though to see how well his characterization fits. They also share thoughts about the majesty and brilliance of the scene when Yoda lifts the X-Wing out of the swamp in The Empire Strikes Back. It’s a fascinating video and I enjoyed it (thank you confirmation bias). Please, be civil in the comments.
