Cinemark Wants $700k in Damages From Victims of Aurora Theater Shooting
This is disgusting. After years of battling in the courts, Cinemark has finally been found not guilty of responsibility in the 2012 Aurora shooting. For those who do not remember, this is the incident where a gunman walked into a screening of The Dark Knight Rises and killed 12 people and injured several others. Since then, the theater chain has been in legal battles with the families of victims and survivors, and now that they've won, they want reparations.
Deadline says Colorado law allows for the winning party to seek damages and civil fees in the event of winning a case, and now Cinemark is wants nearly $700,000 in legal fees from the 30 plaintiffs involved in the case. Mind you, these are the families of victims who died and people injured in the shooting that they're demanding this money from.
While I'm not wishing to stick my neck out too far on this one, I will say that next to no one would have guessed or even believed something like that would have happened that night in Aurora, so I can see the jury's point in finding the cinema not guilty. What I can't believe is that Cinemark wouldn't just eat the fees and let it go as opposed to turning around and driving the nail further into families who are already permanently affected by the events of that day. It's just greedy. Hopefully someone steps forward and does the right thing.
