Claire Foy Soars in the Beautiful First Trailer for H IS FOR HAWK

Roadside Attractions and Lionsgate have released the first trailer for H is for Hawk, a stunning new drama inspired by true events and adapted from Helen Macdonald’s acclaimed memoir.

H is for Hawk tells the story of Helen, played by Claire Foy, a Cambridge academic who is consumed by grief after the sudden death of her father, portrayed by Brendan Gleeson.

Searching for meaning and healing, Helen turns to the ancient art of falconry, training a wild goshawk named Mabel. Through her connection with the bird, she begins to confront her pain and rediscover herself.

The official synopsis reads: "When Cambridge academic Helen's (Claire Foy) father dies, the grief sends her spiralling into an abyss. In an effort to process her loss, she retreats from the human world to train a fearsome Northern goshawk.

“Foy gives an exceptional, career-best performance as Helen, while Charlotte Bruus Christensen's cinematography & Sarah Finlay's production design help director Philippa Lowthorpe access the gravity and emotion of this story."

Directed by Philippa Lowthorpe, known for Swallows and Amazons, Misbehaviour, and episodes of The Crown, The Third Day, and Willow, the film blends wonderful visuals with deep emotional resonance.

The screenplay was written by Emma Donoghue (Room) and Lowthorpe, bringing Macdonald’s moving journey from the page to the screen.

Early festival audiences have praised the film for its emotional depth and Foy’s transformative performance. The combination of nature, loss, and renewal creates something intimate and powerful. It’s a story about learning to let go while holding on to what matters most.

H is for Hawk will be released in select U.S. theaters this December from Roadside Attractions.
