CLUE Scripted Series Will Take the Classic Murder Mystery to the Small Screen
The timeless whodunit board game Clue is about to make a killer move back into the spotlight. Sony Pictures Television and Hasbro Entertainment are bringing a scripted adaptation of the iconic murder mystery to the TV marketplace, with Dana Fox and Nicholas Stoller leading the creative charge.
The hourlong series, titled Clue, has officially been taken out to potential buyers and there’s a lot of interest in it. In true Clue fashion, the pitch was sent out in a manila envelope, complete with a copy of the classic board game, to get networks in the right spirit.
This project arrives at a perfect time as Netflix recently greenlit an unscripted Clue series, also produced by Sony TV and Hasbro Entertainment, creating the perfect double play for fans of the game.
The new Clue series will reimagine the beloved game with a modern twist, while keeping its signature mystery intact. A group of strangers is invited to a billionaire’s lavish murder mystery night to answer those infamous questions of who, where, and with what, but soon realize that the stakes are far deadlier than they could have imagined.
Fox is working on the script and will serve as showrunner, while Stoller is set to direct. The duo will executive produce alongside Hasbro Entertainment’s Gabriel Marano, Margy Love from Fox’s company Foxy, Inc., and Conor Welch of Stoller Global Solutions.
Given Fox and Stoller’s strong background in comedy, Clue is expected to carry a sharp, witty tone reminiscent of Knives Out.
Since debuting in 1949, Clue has sold over 150 million copies worldwide and remains one of the most recognizable games of all time. The original lineup featured six iconic suspects that included Mrs. Peacock, Professor Plum, Miss Scarlett, Mrs. White, Mr. Green, and Colonel Mustard, along with six weapons and nine possible murder locations. The goal: solve the mystery of who did it, where, and how.
Of course, Clue has already made a memorable leap to the screen before. The 1985 cult-classic movie starred Tim Curry as Wadsworth the butler, alongside Eileen Brennan, Madeline Kahn, Christopher Lloyd, Michael McKean, Martin Mull, and Lesley Ann Warren. The film’s mix of dark humor and mystery turned it into a fan favorite that continues to endure all these years later.
There was also a five-part Clue limited series on The Hub network in 2011, and an animated version was once in development at Fox—but never made it past the planning stage.
The upcoming Clue series joins a growing lineup of Hasbro Entertainment projects based on their iconic game properties. That includes Dungeons & Dragons in development at Netflix and a Magic: The Gathering universe being built with Legendary Entertainment.
With Fox and Stoller leading the charge, Clue could end up being a sharp, stylish, and suspenseful new take on a game that fans have enjoyed for over seven decades.
