COBRA KAI Creators Say Spin-Offs Are Being Considered

Cobra Kai is one of the most popular series available right now. The show began humbly at YouTube Premium where we got the first two seasons, and it made the jump to Netflix this year where it quickly hit #1. Then we started this year out with an awesome third season, leaving fans anxious for more. But could there be more stories stemming from the flagship series? The creators say it’s been discussed.

In a recent interview with TVLine, Cobra Kai creators Hayden Schlossberg, Josh Heald and Jon Hurwitz talked about the possibility of future spinoffs, with Schlossberg saying:

“If you look at our careers, we’ve always had sequels. We fall in love with our characters. Every permutation of spinoff or deep-dive crosses our minds. It all has to be the right thing, and it has to be the same level of quality that Cobra Kai is. Our minds are always thinking Karate Kid, so that possibility is definitely out there.”

He talked about the three showrunners’ thought processes in regards to the series’ future, saying:

“Our hope is that we can really expand this whole Karate Kid universe and reinvigorate the fanbase, so that it’s a story we can continue telling. We do have an endgame for Cobra Kai, but we always compare it to our other favorite show, Breaking Bad, [and how] they’re able to keep the story going with Better Call Saul and El Camino. We spend time with Kreese’s backstory [in Season 3], but we could’ve spent more time with Kreese’s backstory. We have so many things to tell in these half-hour episodes, it ends up not being enough. We’re just having a fun time as friends getting to work in the sandbox of The Karate Kid and hope to keep it going.”

When some show creators talk about spin-offs, it feels like they are just milking the success their show has gotten. But I truly believe that the Cobra Kai creators would only do a spin-off if it were something they could really tell a great story with and it were something that they, as fans of the franchise, would be interested in watching. I have a lot of faith in these guys, and I would definitely check out a spin-off that they were in charge of. Are there any Karate Kid storylines you’d like to see these guys do a deep dive into?
